In Dr. Neumann Peltier-Technik GmbH systems, sensors usually play a central role. Like many components in electrical engineering, they are inspired by a human organ — the sensory organs.
Robot arms emulate human limbs, CPUs replicate the computing power of the brain, and motors provide the strength of our muscles. Within this analogy, sensors take on all the inputs that humans perceive through their senses — pressure, temperature, olfactory influences, or visual stimuli.
In our case, we naturally focus primarily on one domain: temperature.
Just as our body communicates through external stimuli that we are too cold or too warm, sensors transmit thermal data to the control unit, which then adjusts the temperature accordingly. However, instead of opening a window or turning up the heating like we would, the system regulates temperature changes in the range of tenths of a Kelvin.
This is a critical function for the overall performance of our enclosure cooling systems, because without highly sensitive sensor technology, precise and reliable temperature control would be extremely difficult to achieve.
Manual measurement, manual temperature adjustment, and regular system monitoring make cabinet temperature control without an automated system not only time-consuming, but also highly prone to errors. When such sensitive tasks are handled manually, it cannot be ruled out that work is not carried out with sufficient care or that other mistakes occur.
The consequences of a poorly temperature-controlled control cabinet are likely familiar to anyone who has ever experienced even a minor system failure. In the worst case, overheating of the components can lead to a complete system failure. Conversely, excessive cooling can cause condensation, resulting in water damage to the electronic components inside the enclosure.

As already mentioned, sensor technology plays a central role in our systems. For the functionality of our sensors, we use thermocouples. These make use of the Thermoelectric Effect — a principle from thermophysics: even small temperature differences across the thermocouples can be converted into electrical energy.
Since our sensors are designed for energy efficiency, they operate completely energy-autonomously during their service life and therefore do not require an external power source. However, this is not the only advantage of our patented sensor system “TOC”.
The Thermal Observation Contactless System (TOC) offers, in addition to absolute energy autonomy, a wireless operating principle and an exceptionally robust design. As a result, the sensor unit itself is not only highly precise, but also well protected against external influences and extreme operating conditions.
Its IP56 protection rating ensures that the TOC system is resistant to dust, dirt, and moisture. In addition to an ambient temperature tolerance range of -20 to 55 °C, the system delivers measurement values within a range of -20 to 100 °C.
At intervals of ten seconds, the sensor measures the temperature and generates a detailed measurement value every 120 seconds, which is then transmitted to the associated control unit of your enclosure temperature control system.
Due to the high frequency of measurements, the system can react quickly to unexpected changes, providing essential stability for the temperature regulation process. If the measured temperature changes by more than 2 Kelvin within the 120-second interval, a value is transmitted immediately so that the system can respond to this change as quickly as possible.
Data transmission by the TOC system takes place via the 868 MHz radio frequency. If you require a higher level of security for data transmission, other frequencies are also available.
Our sensors are equipped with a practical mounting frame that, on the one hand, ensures perfect thermal isolation from the outside of the control cabinet and, on the other hand, provides a further key advantage for the TOC system: maximum installation flexibility.
Whether it involves drilled holes for screws or other mounting modifications — there is virtually no location where our TOC system cannot be installed.
The contact point to the measurement object is covered with a special graphite thermal conductive foil. This ensures a high level of measurement accuracy while simultaneously providing potential equalization with the surrounding environment.
